REGISTRATION AND TRANSFERS The American Milking Shorthorn Society (AMSS) records registrations and makes transfers into the Official Herdbook and Appendix Registries of the Milking Shorthorn breed. For the lowest rates, breeders are encouraged to register animals at a young age and become a member of both state and national Milking Shorthorn societies.
Registration of purebred Milking Shorthorns is an
investment in your future. A registered Milking Shorthorn has
a perminant record of its ancestry and has an increased sale
value. The AMSS will also record an embryo in the ET
Identification program and transfers of embryo ownership. Only
correct registration and transfers allow the progeny of an
animal to be registered.
THE APPLICATION The application has two parts. The long narrow
one on the left side is for your reference until the
certificate of application arrives. The larger part is to be
sent to the AMSS office along with the correct fees.
TATTOO: All animals registered with AMSS must have an
identifying tattoo. The tattoo can be in the left or right ear
or both ears. This tattoo can be made up of any combination of
numbers and letters. Note: vaccination tattoos are usually in
the right ear, but is not considered to be the identifying
tattoo. It is recommended that at least two digit be used.
Suggestions for tattoo are: 5105, for May 10, 1995, the
animals date of birth; L21, the breeders initial with
consecutive numbered animals, or any other
numerical/alphabetical system.
GRADE-UP: Check YES
only if the animal is the result of breeding a full herdbook
animal with an unregistered Milking Shorthorn and is a female.
All others, check NO.
HORNED OR POLLED: Horned refers
to an animal that was born with horns, whether or not the
breeder removed them. Polled will result in a P suffix on the
animal's name.
TYPE OF BREEDING: Was the animal bred
naturally or artifical inseminated, or the result of embryo
transplant? Check the appropriate box.
NAME: The name
must be limited to 30 spaces. This includes all suffixes that
apply. For example, EXP - experimental (a female the result of
breeding a full herdbook animal to a birth record animal), P -
polled, PS - polled sport, S - beef shorthorn bloodlines, OC
-off color (full herdbook animal with color or spots other
than red, white or roan). If the dam was bred when you
purchased her, you must use the breeders prefix. A cow's name
should be feminine and a bull's name should be masculine.
